"First African Baptist Church, Sapelo Island, Ga" Tessa Parker, 2023. Sapelo Island is a protected barrier island off the coast of Georgia. This island is only accessible by boat or ferry and a very small population of about 50 residents call it home year round. The original Gullah Geechee community has roots going back as far as the early 1800’s. The First African Baptist church is a historic building that sits nestled in the live oaks and palms in a remote northern part of the island, called Raccoon Bluff.
